COVVI Provides The First Multi-Articulated Hand Through The NHS
We are proud to announce that the first COVVI Hand has officially been approved for funding via the NHS. This historic milestone is the start of a very exciting chapter for COVVI, following the approval of NHS funding for multi-grip hands in September 2022. As a bionics manufacturer that was founded and has its headquarters in the UK, COVVI’s aim has always been to lead the way in the United Kingdom, and this moment represents the power of the COVVI Hand and the difference it can make for upper-limb amputees.
The newest COVVI user and the first to receive a multi-articulated hand in this manner is 68-year-old Roland Hough. He is a long-time user of myoelectric prosthetics, but after 36 years of wearing different devices which weren’t able to provide the level of quality he needed, recently decided to push for the latest technology available and gain a new lease on life! At the end of March 2023, Roland completed his month-long trial with the COVVI Hand. During this time, he was amazed by what he was able to accomplish and fell in love with the device. “This hand, in my honest opinion, is a brilliant option and it has completely changed my life in the four weeks I had it.”
During his day-to-day life, activities like picking up eggs, tying shoelaces, folding clothes and mowing the lawn were made easier for Roland and he couldn’t be happier. He found himself documenting his journey on social media to showcase these achievements to his friends and family. His kind words even made it back to our Leeds headquarters and warmed the hearts of the COVVI team. “The [COVVI] Hand Is silent and powerful, but also gentle. I’ve pushed it hard in the garage and garden on a variety of different tasks and I’ve always been pleased with the results. Don’t say you can’t do it until you’ve tried a COVVI Hand.” Roland’s message and story can now act as a beacon for others in the UK to push for this kind of funding through the NHS.
Giving people a chance to change their lives is what the COVVI team strive to achieve every single day. Despite already being well established in dozens of countries, the UK is and always has been our home, so working alongside our national healthcare service is a very exciting prospect. We’re ready to help amputees and those with limb differences in the UK to create many more stories like Roland’s!
