Supporting Limb Difference Awareness Month 2022
April is #LimbDifferenceAwarenessMonth; a time to help raise awareness about what life is like when you suffer with limb loss of a limb difference.
We’ve seen and been a part of so many inspiring stories from users and organisations around the world this month and we wanted to join in and share just one incredible story from our patient advocates, Ashley and James Young; as well as their daughter Elara. We hope this small insight into the lives of many like them will inspire others to jump on board in supporting the community.
After an unfortunate accident involving a train, James was worried that life as he knew it was over. The damage caused to his residual limbs was significant and caused them to be easily worn out. Using the COVVI hand helped take off some of the load and helped him become accustomed to life with two hands again; quickly getting excited for the new tasks he was able to perform.
James’ other half Ashley, is also an amputee; in this instance, she’s been missing her lower right arm since birth. She suffered chronic pain on her left side due to overuse and decided on the COVVI hand because of it’s unique design and impressive functionality. Using our hand has made it easier for Ashley to spend time with their daughter; allowing her to multitask without missing a beat.
The couple show two sides of amputation and how electronic prostheses has dramatically changed their lives for the good. They continually demonstrate this positivity on their social media platforms; showing that the ordinary can be quite extraordinary.
Our vision at COVVI, has always been to deliver a world-leading prosthetic hand with users and clinicians at its heart and by working with Ashley and James, we have been able to gain invaluable feedback and insight that allowed us to fine-tune the COVVI Hand to be more responsive, adaptive and user-friendly. By working together we can action real positive change to the many lives of upper-body prosthetic users forever.
