Who Can Use A Bionic Hand?

Prosthetics That Redefine Ability

COVVI’s bionic hand is made for people with upper-limb differences to support them with daily tasks and activities.  But who exactly can use a bionic hand?

The COVVI Hand is suitable for people who have experienced an upper-limb amputation due to injury, accident or illness, as well as individuals who were born with a limb difference due to a congenital condition.

Designed for all types of residual limbs

People with above-elbow (transhumeral), through elbow (elbow disarticulation) and below-elbow (transradial) amputations can all use the COVVI Hand. Since the advanced bionic hand is compatible with several different prosthetic parts, clinicians can custom-build a full prosthetic device equipped with the COVVI Hand to best suit individual users.

Supporting you and your lifestyle

Our bionic hand is also well-suited for both unilateral (those with a limb difference on one side of their body) and bilateral (those who have a limb difference on both sides of their body) users. And we recommend our prosthetic to most teenagers and adults; our bionic hand is available in three sizes and multiple colour options for ultimate personalisation.

It should be noted that to be fitted with a bionic hand like COVVI’s, amputation between the wrist and shoulder is required so that the prosthetic arm and hand will fit correctly. If you have a partial hand absence, you will need to be evaluated by your clinician to assess the options available to you.

Bionic hands are controlled through signals detected by sensors, which are activated by flexing the muscles in your limb. Usually, users who are unable to produce any viable signals cannot operate a hand like COVVI’s. This means that if you are unable to move your arm due to nerve damage, a stroke or any other muscular injury, then you most likely will be unable to operate a myo-electric bionic device.

However, we recommend consulting with an upper-limb prosthetic specialist, who may be able to provide alternative approaches for using a bionic device in complex cases.

Please Note: The COVVI Hand is a complete limb absence solution, therefore your residual limb must end between your wrist and shoulder in order to be fitted with a prosthetic hand like ours. As it is also a myo-electric prosthetic device controlled by EMG sensors, patients must also be able to produce muscle signals to operate the hand, which means it isn't suitable for those who have lost the ability to move their arm from an injury, stroke or any other form of paralysis.
