Carmen Tinning Promoted: Celebrating Women in Engineering Day

COVVI is celebrating Women in Engineering Day by spotlighting the company’s newly appointed Engineering Manager, Carmen Tinning.
Having fostered a keen interest in engineering from a young age, Carmen started taking courses to learn more about the subject from the age of fifteen.
“It was when watching the Paralympics back in 2012 that I decided I wanted to pursue a career in prosthetics,” Carmen said, “I was deciding on whether I wanted to be a doctor or an engineer, and knew that by working in Biomedical Engineering, I could achieve a perfect mix of the two.”
Carmen graduated in 2022 with a 1st Class Honours Integrated Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. Throughout her time at University, she completed a range of research projects looking at two-handed haptic devices used in virtual reality, EEG-powered brain-computer interfaces and performed research assistant roles designing 3D printed haptic devices for schools.
Joining COVVI soon after, Carmen started her career as a Product Development Engineer, where she supported product design and in maintaining COVVI’s quality levels through inspections of bionic hand assemblies. Demonstrating her ability to deliver consistent results for the team, Carmen was soon promoted to Product Development Manager, where she has driven a series of product launches and developments.
Carmen now starts the next chapter in her career, leading COVVI’s team of expert engineers, pushing new and innovative designs and developing existing COVVI products to best serve our users.
Simon Pollard, CEO of COVVI, stated: “Since Carmen joined COVVI, she has made a significant impact, driving innovation that directly benefits our global user base. Her ability to combine technical excellence with a collaborative mindset has strengthened not only our product offering but also the team around her.
“We’re so proud that she has chosen to build her career here, contributing to a culture of progress and shared success. In her new role, Carmen will continue to play a pivotal part in shaping the future of prosthetics and robotics, inspiring the next generation of talent at COVVI.”
COVVI is excited to share this news as part of our International Women in Engineering Day celebrations. Commenting on the importance of the day, Carmen said: “It is paramount to both celebrate and recognise the significant contributions of women in the field of engineering. This day supports in doing so, whilst also encouraging more young women to pursue STEM careers, as currently women represent only 15.7% of the UK engineering workforce.”
