COVVI to Exclusively Distribute ‘Free Lock’ System in the UK and ROI

With this new partnership, COVVI will be making the Free Lock System available to those with upper-limb and hand differences, nerve damage and muscle injuries across the UK and Ireland for the first time.
For over 30 years, the Free Lock System has supported users with upper-limb differences to safely and securely grip the handlebars of bikes and motorcycles. The system was first developed in the mid-nineties by Wilfred Mijnheer of Stel Orthopedie BV, in collaboration with ‘Motorcycle Mobility for the Disabled’, who has gone on to support users worldwide.
Going through a series of evolutions since then, today the Free Lock System remains a high-quality orthopaedic appliance that is used for more than its initial use of just riding a motorcycle. Cyclists and mountain bikers with upper-limb differences use the system on both amateur and professional levels, including for competing in world championships and even the Paralympics.
Available as a terminal device to be attached to users’ existing prostheses or orthoses, the Free Lock System can support a range of people. The device is available in two versions; a device for adults, and a smaller orthosis for children and people with neuromuscular weakness.
COVVI is now thrilled to announce the exclusive distribution of the Free Lock System across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. With COVVI’s experience of distributing prosthetic devices within the UK over the past five years, this partnership with Free Lock will look to further the opportunities available to those with upper-limb differences.
COVVI’s UK-based Clinical Specialist Prosthetist, Kameron Maxwell, said: “We are so excited to bring Free Lock’s unique solution to the UK, adding it to our growing directory of support for those with upper-limb differences. The Free Lock system has the capacity to allow so many people to safely engage in activities to support both their physical and emotional well-being by doing the activities they love.”
Wilfred Mijnheer, Director of Stel Orthopedie and Creator of Free Lock gripping systems, said: “We are very proud that our Free Lock gripping system is now available for cyclists and motorcyclists in the UK and ROI. Together with COVVI, we are taking a wonderful step in the more than thirty-year development of the Free Lock gripping system. And we hope that many prosthetic and orthotic users in the UK and ROI will be able to experience joy and freedom while cycling and motorcycling.”
