Ashley Young And The COVVI Hand Featured In New Barbie Movie
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie releases today and viewers will be able to spot a few small cameos of the COVVI Hand sprinkled throughout the film, courtesy of the amazing Ashley Young (@OrlandoCyborgAshley). The movie has cast a wide range of diverse ‘Barbies’ and Ashley is thrilled to help represent those with limb loss and limb differences with her appearance.
Mattel released their first wheelchair Barbie doll in 1997, and has since released a variety of dolls with disabilities and limb differences. Recently in 2019, Wheelchair Barbie was created as a part of the new ‘Fashionistas’ line, which included dolls with removable prosthetic limbs!
Global Head of Barbie and Dolls Portfolio at Mattel, Lisa McKnight, stated the importance of representing a wider range of people by saying “Our Barbie Fashionistas line features a range of skin tones, body types and disabilities to reflect the diversity kids see in the world around them. Knowing that kids’ early childhood experiences help shape how they perceive the world, we are dedicated to reflecting a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion in our dolls.”
