The First UK User Has Been Fit With The Free Lock Prosthetic System

The Free Lock prosthetic system provides its users with a safe way to securely grip the handles of bikes and motorcycles, and is exclusively distributed in the UK and the Republic of Ireland by COVVI.
First developed in the mid-nineties by Wilfred Mijnheer of Stel Orthopedie BV, in collaboration with ‘Motorcycle Mobility for the Disabled’, the device has gone on to support users worldwide.
Recently, Clinical Lead Prosthetist, Asad Khan from Leeds-based Proactive Prosthetics, fitted a new user with this system, allowing him to ride his bike with ease. As somebody with an above-elbow limb difference, the user’s new prosthesis was built to complement the Free Lock system and provide a comfortable fit.
COVVI’s UK-based Clinical Specialist, Kameron Maxwell, said: “It is so heartening to see people gain confidence in doing the activities they love. As more users across the UK are being fitted with their new prostheses system, the effect this is having on their daily life is plain to see.”
Available as a terminal device to be attached to users’ existing prostheses or orthoses, the Free Lock System can support a range of people. The device is available in two versions: a device for adults and a smaller orthosis for children and people with neuromuscular weakness.
