Jessica Smith Testing The Electrodes On Her Second Visit
Following on from her initial appointment last week, Jessica Smith has now received her test socket, which will allow her to start using the COVVI Hand in her day-to-day life while the final device is prepared.
The prosthetist has created a custom mould that perfectly fits Jessica’s arm following on from the original casts that were taken at her previous visits. This allows her to control the hand via signals passed through electrodes located near her elbow.
Over the next week, Jessica will start retraining her brain as well as her body to use the COVVI Hand more efficiently. “Today I learnt how to hold hands for the first time. I took my kids with me so that they can be part of this monumental journey too. So many questions, and so much awe from both myself and the kids. I got to take the hand home! I picked something up for the first time… and I’m learning how to gently hold hands.”
It’s been an incredible journey so far, for Jessica and her family, and we can’t wait to share the next update from her final visit to the clinic.
