Stephen Lowry Represents COVVI At BLRS 2023
Esteemed advocate, Stephen Lowry, took to the stage and represented COVVI at the BLRS 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting in Belfast last week. The British Limb Reconstruction Society was founded in 1997, with the aim of advancing education and research in the field of limb reconstruction. The society regularly holds meetings and training courses for surgeons and allied professionals alike.
Stephen has been a long-time member of our COVVI advocate family and is well versed in the COVVI Hand. He became the first man in Northern Ireland to receive a bionic hand after losing his right hand in a nightclub bomb attack in 1985. Since 2020, Stephen has been an avid supporter of the COVVI Hand, often attending meetings and exhibitions so he can share his experience with the masses.
Last week, he eloquently told his story to a room full of surgeons and OTs and was given a great platform to talk about the COVVI Hand in depth. The BLRS meeting was a brilliant opportunity to COVVI on the map and was such a success, that Stephen has been asked to come back and do peer talks with patients who are interested in the hand.
When speaking to Stephen after the meeting he said that “being able to stand on stage and show it off was excellent, even though the plan for your speech goes out the window after a few minutes. I was also able to get across the physiological effect the hand has on a person from a good point of view, as it can make a user feel more confident.”
COVVI are always proud of our advocates for spreading the good word about our hand. We look forward to seeing what else Stephen gets up to in the future!
