COVVI Wows Students At University Of Hull With Insight Into Innovative Engineering
Amelia Korko, COVVI’s Servicing and Repairs Manager, spoke at a university alumni event earlier this month, inspiring future engineers with her journey into the world of prosthetics and robotics.
The event served as an opportunity for students to learn about working within different companies and industries, finding out about former graduates’ career paths to support their own future prospects. COVVI were delighted to join the ranks of a number of notable names in the industry, such as Julie Shave from Women in Manufacturing and Engineering.
Within her presentation, Amelia told the audience how she knew she wanted to work in prosthetics from the age of 15, doing everything she could throughout her education to break into the industry. Amelia graduated in May 2022 with a 1st Class Honours Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering and quickly began working as a prosthetic technician at an artificial limb unit in Hull. For the next 18 months, she made sockets for both lower limb and upper limb amputees.
After seeing an interview with COVVI Advocate Sarah de Lagarde on the news, Amelia knew where she wanted to develop her career. Joining COVVI in 2023 as a production technician, Amelia has spent the last two years working her way up to her current position managing servicing and repairs.
Amelia stated: “The role can be challenging at times, but I take everything in my stride, striving for perfection and a quick turnaround time. The industry is so exciting, and the launch of COVVI’s Robotic Hand makes the opportunities endless.”
In a networking opportunity after the event, students got the chance to see demonstrations of both the robotic and prosthetic hands. Attendees commented on how ‘cool’ the devices were, taking time to experiment with the different grip patterns achievable with the hands.
There was an influx of questions about the work being done at COVVI, with students keen to learn about how the hand is operated, as well as engaging with our social media, and hearing more about our inspiring advocates.
